What is a Torn ACL?
The ACL is one of four major ligaments in the knee, connecting the femur to the tibia and playing a crucial role in knee stability. An ACL tear, whether partial or complete, can cause significant instability, often described as the knee “giving out.” This injury is commonly seen in athletes and active individuals due to sudden stops, changes in direction, or impacts.
ACL Reconstruction Using Allograft Grafts
Reconstruction is typically necessary to restore knee stability when the ACL is torn. At Suburban Orthopaedics, we offer ACL reconstruction using allograft grafts, which utilize donor tissue to replace the damaged ligament. Allograft grafts are carefully processed and sterilized, ensuring they are safe and effective. These grafts can include patellar tendon, tibialis tendon, or hamstring tendon tissue. The graft choice depends on your specific condition, and your surgeon will determine the best option for your knee.
How is ACL Reconstruction Performed?
The procedure begins with small incisions (portals) around the knee joint, through which a camera (scope) and surgical instruments are inserted. The surgeon removes the torn ACL and prepares the knee for the graft by creating precise tunnels in the femur and tibia. The allograft tissue, which may include bone plugs for secure anchoring, is inserted into these tunnels using a guide wire. Once in place, screws are used to secure the graft. Over time, the bone plugs naturally integrate with the surrounding bone, creating a stable and functional new ACL.
Recovery After ACL Reconstruction
Following the procedure, patients typically experience swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with medication and rest. Physical therapy is integral to recovery, focusing on restoring strength, flexibility, and stability to the knee. Most patients can return to light activities within a few weeks, with full recovery taking several months. Your Suburban Orthopaedics, skilled care team, will provide a personalized recovery plan to help you regain your mobility and confidence.
